Raymond Smith Jr. Obituary

Raymond H. Smith, 81, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 1 st , 2024. Born in Pittsburgh PA on
January 27 th ,1943, he was the son of the late Raymond H. Smith Sr and Mary (Rutledge) Smith. Ray lived
a full and vibrant life and touched the lives of many people along the way.
After graduating from Dayton University, he married his wife of 60 years Mary Jo (Scott) in 1964.
They settled in Allison Park PA and he continued to live a life of adventure, whether flying, sailing, skiing,
tending to his beautiful gardens or having wonderful family get togethers, his sense of humor and love
of family never wavered.
Ray and Mary Jo enjoyed traveling with lifelong friends all over the globe. One of Ray’s favorite pastimes
was fly fishing and he tied many flies and loved to teach the craft to others.
Over the past two decades, after moving to Shadyside, Ray loved his daily habit of walking Schenley Park
and volunteering at The Jubilee Soup Kitchen in Pittsburgh. He also enjoyed attending lectures at CMU
with Mary Jo and was host to many international students who enjoyed their hospitality and remained
friends over the years.
Ray is survived by his wife Mary Jo, daughter Kathleen (Tom) Roberts of Barrington NH, and son Jeffrey
(Colleen) Smith of Allison Park PA, his nine siblings, countless beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews,
extended family, and friends.
Raymond was a much-loved Pop-Pops to his grandchildren, Matt Kleinman of Derry NH, Emma Kleinman
of Boston MA, Conor Smith of Chicago IL, Reilly Smith of Allison Park PA, step-grandchildren Rebecca
Roberts Lugo of Wolfeboro NH, and Alex Roberts of Hampton NH. They all have stories of adventure
with their Pop-Pops to continue to share in his memory.
Ray made the most generous donation of his body to science at the University of Pittsburgh Medical
School and will be honored in a private service.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Willows in Oakmont for their gentle and dedicated care.
In Lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to Jubilee Kitchen; //jubileekitchen.org/ways-to-give/
