Leona T. (VanDyke) Surdyn

Leona (VanDyke) Surdyn, of Kennedy Township, PA, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in McKees Rocks, PA, she was the daughter of the late Sophie Tolufski Kenosky and Ignatz Szymborski. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fred Surdyn, a loving son Richard H. VanDyke, and 2 brothers, Eugene and Edward Szymborski.

Leona was a dedicated member of St. Cyril Methodius Church in McKees Rocks for many years, where she attended Polish Elementary School as a child and sang in the choir as an adult. It was there that she met her future husband, Fred. After St. Cyril closed its doors, she attended St. Malachy Church in Kennedy Township.

Leona was a graduate of Stowe High School. Later in life, sheworked as a nurse at Mckees Rocks Industrial Enterprise.  Leona was known for being a loving caretaker to anyone in need, as she took many under her wing.  She was also a volunteer at the Information Desk at Ohio Valley Hospital for over 10 years. Leona had a love for life that was unmatched.  Her family and friends will remember all the happiness and fun times that she brought to their lives.  

More than anything, Leona loved her family.  She is survived by her loving sons Daniel VanDyke (Christine) and James (Jennie Palermo), grandchildren Jason VanDyke (Elijah), Matthew VanDyke (Taylor), and Emilie Bielawa (Matt), a great grandchild (Violet), daughter-in law, Nadine Dietrich VanDyke, sister-in-law Ruth Szymborski and several loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.  

Friends will be received on Sunday, March 17, 2024 from 4:00 to 7:00pm at Anthony M. Musmanno Funeral Home (941 McCoy Road., Kennedy Township, PA 15136). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 10:00am at St. Malachy Church. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Ken Mawr American Legion Post 464 (229 Herbst Road, Coraopolis, PA 15108.
