H. Wayne Miller Obituary

H. Wayne Miller

Age 87, of Robinson Township, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, August 8, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Josephine and Henry Miller, and his brother, Robert Miller. Devoted husband of 62 years to Lucille (Butz) Miller, he was the love of her life. Dear father of Lynne (David) Bryan, Karen (Mike) Mastroianni, and Jill (Gary) Slifkey. Grandfather of Joshua (Christin) Bryan, Jessica Bryan, Caleb (Kelly) Bryan, Meghan (Dan) Abbenante, Emily Mastroianni, Michael Mastroianni, Cyprian, Benedict, Paschal, and Katharine Slifkey. Great–grandfather of Jameston, Annabelle, Evalynne (Joshua Bryan) Hayden, and Myles (Meghan Abbenante), Theodore, and Isabella (Caleb Bryan). Wayne was a devoted husband, son, father, grandfather, and friend. He was also an avid bowler, fisherman, birdwatcher, prankster, storyteller, and Pittsburgh sports fan. His early life revolved around his father’s bakery businesses in Pittsburgh and Warren, PA, and the things you learn with the freedom of boyhood back then.

He started his career on a sand and gravel dredge on the Ohio River for Dravo Basic Materials, and worked his way up to specializing in quality control.  Wayne not only mastered the field but he left a permanent mark on the concrete and aggregate industry in the tri-state area. He had a hand in the success of hundreds of major infrastructure projects throughout the region and trained countless industry personnel.  He took the time and care to treat every project, no matter how small, as important. He was one of the early founders of the American Concrete Institute–Pittsburgh Area Chapter and dedicated his time to improving industry training and standards. The latter part of his career, he spent consulting on major construction and research projects with Bryan Materials Group.  The last time he consulted was the day before he died.

Wayne never had a formal education, but he never stopped learning, reading, and being curious.  He never had a teaching degree, but he taught hundreds of men how to do their job right and well.  He taught his children and grandchildren how to fish, to play cards, to be a man or woman of character and to put others first.

His humbleness, resilience, positive attitude, and character were highlighted years ago during his cancer journey, inspiring many to always look at the glass not just as half full, but overflowing.

Wayne could be found on the courts and fields cheering on his family with his wife for over the last 50 years. He would leave a loaf of Mancini’s bread in your door while the car radio blared a polka in the driveway. He also enjoyed breakfast with his buddies. It might not surprise you that he would pick up a hitchhiker, repair something with duct tape, and battle with backyard animals while feeding the birds. Almost daily, these past few years, he loved playing Scrabble and cards with his wife, Lu, before relaxing on the patio. He was a proud lifetime member of the Forest Grove Volunteer Fire Department, ranking as Lieutenant. He volunteered for school, church, Road to Recovery, Ohio Valley hospital, blood donor, pouring driveways, driving anyone anywhere, and was a loyal customer to many local businesses.

He brought people together for Pirate games, family reunions, company picnics and fishing trips. He was a member of Holy Trinity / Archangel Gabriel Parish.  Family and friends are welcome for visitation at the Anthony M.
