Rene Brungraber, long time resident of Mt. Lebanon, PA, died December 18 at her home in Friendship Village, Upper St. Clair, after a brief illness. She was born on May 5, 1924 in Peterson, Iowa, to LeRoy and Beda Meyer. She graduated from Peterson High School and from Iowa State College in 1948 with a BS in Home Economics majoring in Technical Journalism. She later received a Master’s in Arts in Textiles from Wayne University in 1951. Known as an active, cheerful, and hard-working volunteer, Rene served as President of the League of Women Voters in Pittsburgh. A strong proponent of building international understanding through shared experiences, she supported American Field Services by fund raising, hosting students, and sending her own grandchildren on year-long live abroad programs. She performed with the Southminster Handbell Ensemble and the Chancel Choir at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Mt. Lebanon throughout her life in Pittsburgh. Holding strong beliefs regarding politics and public policy, for decades she regularly served as a poll watcher on election nights. As a breast cancer survivor, she participated in fund-raising activities and breast cancer awareness events. On June 25, 1949, she married L. Edward Brungraber of Birmingham, Michigan. She is preceded in death by her husband and one grandson. They had 4 children, Sue Richardson, Carol Reece, Laurie Charlton and Kurt Brungraber. She is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held on January 27 at 2:00 p.m. in Southminster Presbyterian Church, Mt. Lebanon.
