Thomas Paul Hohler, Ph.D. – teacher, scholar of philosophy, passionate competitive sailor, and, especially, husband and father – died of prostate cancer January 9, 2018, at the age of 73. Dr. Hohler (Doc) taught English and World Literature at North Catholic High School for 39 years. He was committed to expanding the intellectual horizon and critical questioning of his students. He was recognized by the national AP Program for his outstanding teaching. Besides teaching he was involved in the founding and development of the co- curriculum Scholar program in conjunction with La Roche College. He was part of and, eventually, became chairman of the committee to maintain the Marianist charism and tradition at North Catholic. Throughout his whole teaching career he was active on the board of the Federation of Pittsburgh Diocesan Teachers. He passionately studied philosophy and published numerous articles and a book in contemporary philosophy after having earned his PhD in philosophy from Duquesne University. His specific interests were focused on the philosophies of Martin Heidegger and Paul Ricoeur, though his study encompassed the history of philosophy. He often taught philosophy as an Adjunct Professor at various Pittsburgh colleges. He and his wife of 39 years, Christine Czapleski, actively campaigned their Flying Scot sailboat locally, regionally, and nationally. Not only were they able to win numerous trophies, but, more importantly, gained many close friends throughout the country through their sailing adventures. The highlight of his retirement was the two years when he lived in France. He enjoyed being immersed in a different culture, a different language, and a different lifestyle. He is survived by his wife, Christine Czapleski; son, Paul M. Hohler (Melinda Wilson) of Houston, TX; and daughter, Andréa Karsko (Nick) of Alexandria, VA; and two fantastic grandsons, Adam and Aaron Karsko. In addition, he is survived by his siblings, Karen Greene (Bud) of Pinehurst, NC, Marcia Weaver (Ken) of Bradenton, FL, Pattie Coy (Dan) of Marion, OH, Susie Hohler of Sandusky, OH, and Craig Hohler (Lauri) of Marion, OH, and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church at 310 Kane Blvd., Scott Township on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at 2:30 p.m. All who attend are invited to join the family to celebrate Tom's life at a luncheon immediately following the service.
