Mrs. Magee was my second grade teacher in 1975-76 at Plummer Elementary School in Libby, MT.
I would like to share a short story with you. Mrs. Magee had a reputation as being mean at Plummer and I remember the day that my mom took me to the school, prior to starting for the year, and I found out that I had been placed in her class. I was heartbroken and terrified at the same time. My parents explained to me that I needed to just wait and see how Mrs. Magee was as a teacher and that I shouldn't believe all that I hear. Lesson learned- Mrs. Magee is probably the one teacher that I had as a child that made an impression on me that has lasted lifelong. During the school year, halloween night, I was attacked by a pack of large dogs. Needless to say I was terrified of dogs after that experience. Shortly thereafter, a stray dog made it's way into the playground during recess. I was scared and Mrs. Magee noticed this. I was crying. Instead of bringing attention to my fear, she asked me to follow her. She took me into the classroom and served me hot cocoa. We chatted- about who knows what- but all she mentioned about the fear of the dog was that I can always stay inside if I needed to during recess. I learned a very valuable lesson that day. I learned that not all that you hear about people is necessarily true, because Mrs. Magee was the most caring and thoughtful teacher I have ever had.
So, the reason I am writing this so long after her passing. Now and again through the years I had thought of Mrs. Magee and wondered if she was still with us. I had always thought it would be nice to speak with her and thank her for her kindness, but had heard nothing of her. Strangely, and by coincidence, my friend Anna had her grandmother visit this last Christmas. Anna and I both work as nurses in California and when we found out that we were both from Libby, MT we became fast friends. We never knew one another during school because she is decades younger than myself. As I was visiting with her grandmother over the holidays, we realized that her grandmother was none other than my music teacher at Plummer Elementary School. She asked who some of my teachers were and I mentioned Mrs. Magee as being my best and favorite teacher. She was not only amazed that I remembered all of my teachers names, but then told me that Mrs. Magee had passed away only last year. How I wish I had met up with my old music teacher much sooner than I did and had been able to talk and thank Mrs. Magee.
I hope that you have enjoyed my story, I know Mrs. Magee touched so very many lives through the years.

Kind Regards,
Jennifer Burrows, RN
